Drey is a young girl with a very difficult family situation and with a brother in prison for selling drugs. The tension in the film comes from Drey's attempts to save Dan from his drug habit, and Dan's efforts to keep Drey from following in her brother footsteps. These two people are better able to save each other than to save themselves. The film, written by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, won prizes at Boston, Deuville, Gotham, Las Palmas, Locarno, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco festivals. Ryan Gosling (Dan) received an Academy Award nomination for lead actor for his role in the film.
Ryan Fleck, è cresciuto a Berkeley e Oakland, California, ed ha studiato cinema alla New York University Tisch School of the Arts. A quel tempo ha conosciuto Anna Boden, che ha cominciato a frequentare e con la quale ha dato vita a una lunga collaborazione. Insieme hanno realizzato i documentari Have You Seen This Man? e Young Rebels (proiettato al Tekfestival 2006), e poi il cortometraggio Gowanus, Brooklyn, realizzato per coinvolgere finanziatori sulla sceneggiatura di Half Nelson. Da allora hanno scritto e diretto insieme il film Sugar, presentato al Sundance Film Festival 2008.
Ryan Fleck, was raised in Berkeley and Oakland, California, and attended New York University Tisch School of the Arts where he studied film. At this time he met Anna Boden and they began dating and decided to collaborate. Together they made the short documentaries Have You Seen This Man? and Young Rebels (screened at 2006 Tekfestival) and then the short film Gowanus, Brooklyn, a sample feature aiming to attract potential financiers to their script, Half Nelson. Fleck and Boden have since co-written and co-directed the film Sugar, which premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
