Performing the Border è un video-saggio realizzato a Ciudad Juares, città ai confini tra Messico e Stati Uniti dove le imprese americane assemblano componenti elettroniche e digitali. Il video-saggio guarda al confine come spazio sia discorsivo che materiale costituito dalla performance e la gestione delle relazioni di genere. Biemann indaga la divisione del lavoro, la prostituzione, l’espressione dei desideri delle donne nell’industria dell’intrattenimento e la violenza sessuale nella sfera pubblica. Una serie di interviste, la voce fuori campo, testi in sovrimpressione, immagini registrate nell’area e immagini d’archivio si intrecciano per mostrare la femminilizzazione dell’economia globale e il suo impatto sulle donne che vivono e lavorano a Ciudad Juarez.
Performing the Border is a video essay set in the Mexican-US border town Ciudad Juarez, where the U.S. industries assemble their electronic and digital equipment. Performing the Border looks at the border as both a discursive and a material space constituted through the performance and management of gender relations. Biemann discusses labor division, prostitution, the expression of female desires in the entertainment industry, and sexual violence in the public sphere. Interviews, scripted voice over, quoted text on the screen, scenes and sounds recorded on site, as well as found footage are combined to give an insight into the feminization of the global economy and its impact on women living and working in Ciudad Juarez.
Artista, studiosa e curatrice, Ursula Biemann si occupa di migrazioni, mobilità, genere e tecnologie. Ha firmato diversi progetto video e i libri Been There and Back to Nowhere (2000), Geography and the Politics of Mobility (2003), Stuff It - The Video Essay in the Digital Age (2003). Il suo lavoro è stato presentato da importanti istituzioni artistiche internazionali tra cui la Biennale di Ginevra, il MoMA di New York, il MACBA di Barcellona, la Tate Modern Gallery di Londra e la Townhouse Gallery del Cairo. Biemann è ricercatrice all’Institute for Theory of Art and Design (Zurigo) e insegna a Ginevra.
Ursula Biemann is an artist, theorist and curator working on migration, mobility, technology and gender. She has authored several video projects, as well as the books Been There and Back to Nowhere (2000), Geography and the Politics of Mobilità (2003), Stuff It - The Video Essay in the Digital Age (2003). Her work has been internationally exhibited by cultural institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art (New York), The MACBA (Barcelona), The Tate Modern Gallery (London) and The Townhouse Gallery (Cairo). She researches at the Institute for Theory of Art and Design at HGK Zurich and teaches in Geneva.
