Noubi, il cui nome significa "il Nubiano", sarebbe dovuto nascere nero di pelle, ma è bianco. Cristiano di nascita, comunista di convinzione, ricco, vuole donare tutta la sua ricchezza al partito comunista. La madre è uno strano personaggio; il fratello, che lui non conosce è omosessuale; la zia è sospettata di ogni sorta di sordida attività; e la sua promessa sposa, una danzatrice del ventre, assomigla come una goccia d'acqua a sua madre. In tutto ciò Noubi deve anche fare i conti con un ex poliziotto, ex comunista che vuole trasformarlo in un terrorista.Tutta la complicata vicenda ha luogo al Cairo nel 1990, anno in cui l'Egitto perde contro l'Inghilterra ai Mondiali di calcio di Roma; anno in cui scoppia la prima guerra del golfo, in cui crolla il blocco socialista e l'integralismo comincia a diventare violento.
"Mercedes non è un film gay nel senso militante del termine. Quello che mi importava davvero all'epoca era di tessere un elogio della differenza in tutti i sensi del termine: differenza sessuale, religiosa, politica, razziale. (Y.Nasrallah)

Noubi, whose name means "the nubian", should have been born black, but he is white. Christian from birth, but communist and rich, he wants to give his wealth to the Communist party. His mother is a strange character; his brother, whom he doesn't know, is homosexual; his haunt is accused of all possible sordid activities; and his bride-to-be is a belly dancer who looks incredibly like his mother. Among all, we must not forget an ex policeman,and ex communist, who wants to make Noubi become a terrorist.
This complicated story takes place in Cairo 1990, when Egypt loses against England at the world soccer Championship in Rome; the same year of the gulf war, of the socialist block's collapse, and the year in which fundamentalism start to become violent.

Yousry Nasrallah (Il Cairo, 1952) si laurea in Scienze Economiche e Politiche all’Università del Cairo. Dopo essere entrato al Cairo Film Institute, nel 1978 parte per il Libano dove diventa giornalista e collabora con la rivista di cinema «Al-Safir». Nel 1980 lavora come assistente alla Regia di Volker Schlöndorff in Die Fälschung e come assistente di produzione per Youssef Chahine in La Mémoire. Nel 1987 realizza il suo primo film, Vols d’été, con cui vince numerosi premi. Tra il 1988 e il 1993 è cosceneggiatore con Chahine in Alexandrie encore et toujours e Cairo... Viewed by Youssef Chahine. Realizza anche film per la televisione e documentari. Nel 1999 vince il Premio della Giuria a Locarno con El Medina.

Yousry Nasrallah (Cairo, 1952) graduated in Economics and Political Science from the University of Cairo. After entering the Cairo Film Institute, he moved to Lebanon in 1978, where he became a journalist and wrote for the cinema magazine “Al-Safir.” In 1980 he worked as Director’s assistant for Volker Schlöndorff in Die Fälschung and was production assistant for Youssef Chahine in La Mémoire. In 1987 he directed his first film, Vols d’été, which won numerous prizes. Between 1988 and 1993 he and Chahine co-wrote the Screenplay for Alexandrie Encore et Toujours and Cairo... Viewed by Youssef Chahine. He has also directed films for television and documentaries. In 1999 he won the Jury’s Prize in Locarno with El Medina.
