"Coming Out" è il primo film prodotto dalla DEFA a condizione omosessuale di Berlino Est. Philipp, un timido insegnante gay è fidanzato con una sua collega per non destare sospetti sulla sua sessualità . Una notte si ritrova in un bar gay ed incontra un ragazzo di cui si innamora perdutamente. Trasformato da quest'amore, Philipp non potrà far altro che affrontare la sua condizione.
Reportedly the first film to come out of East Germany to deal openly with gay issues. Philipp, a closeted teacher is dating a female collegue to keep up appearances. One night, by 'accident' he stumbles into a gay bar, meets and promptly falls in love with a young man. Transformed by this love he is no longer afraid to face up to who he is.
Heiner Carow ha appreso l'arte del cinema facendo educational films. Nel '56 inzio a lavorare come fotografo giovanile per la DEFA. Successivamente alla caduta del muro divenne regista televisivo sono i plurpremiati "Der Legende von Paul und Paula" e "Coming Out" che ha ricevuto l'Orso d'Argento. Carow muore per scause sconosciute il 31 gennaio 1997.
Heiner Carow learned his craft by making educational films until he joined Berlin's DEFA Studios in 1956 and began making youth-oriented pictures. Shortly after the Berlin Wall fell and Germany reunified, Carow became a television director. His most famous films are "Der Legende von Paul und Paula" and "Coming Out" that won the Silver Bear.Carow died of undisclosed causes on January 31, 1997.
