Le donne furono stuprate da membri delle forze armate russe, polacche, francesi e americane durante e dopo la guerra. Durante il periodo delle espulsioni, le ragazze e le donne tedesche furono stuprate anche dai cechi, serbi e sloveni. Fino ad allora erano stati i membri delle SS a stuprarle. Il film indaga questi fatti da vari punti di vista e pone la questione della guerra dei generi in tempo di guerra. The subject of the film is the mass rape of women in Germany at the end of World War II. Women were raped by members of the Russian, Polish, French and American forces during and at the end of World War II. During the period of expulsions, German girls and women were also raped by Czechs, Serbians and Slovenians. Before that German soldiers and members of the SS troops had been the rapists. The film looks at these facts from both sides and raises questions about the war of the sexes in times of war. With this film Helke Sander has initiated the first important public debate on the topic of war, rape and children. The world premiere of Befreier und Befreite took place during the Berlin Film Festival in 1992. Inizia la sua carriera di regista fra il 1962 e il 1963 e viene considerata da subito uno dei nomi di punta di una nuova generazione di registi. Nel 1973 organizza a Berlino, insieme alla regista Claudia von Aleman, il primo festival europeo di cinema delle donne. Nel 1974 fonda “l’unica rivista femminista di cinema in Europa” il «Frauen und Film» di cui sarà editrice, redattrice e autrice fino al 1982. La Sander ha insegnato Cinema ad Amburgo, pubblicato diversi saggi e articoli, una raccolta di racconti, il romanzo Oh Lucy. Al suo lavoro sono stati dedicati omaggi e retrospettive in America, Asia, Australia ed Europa. Helke Sander starts her career on 1962-1963 and she is immediately regarded as one of the new big names in directing. In 1973 together with film director Claudia von Aleman she organizes the first European women’s film festival. In 1974 she founds the “only European feminist film magazine”, entitled Frauen und Film and becomes its publisher, editor and author until 1982. Sander was Professor of Film at Hamburg, she publishes occasional articles and essays, the novel Oh Lucy. Retrospectives and festivals in America, Asia, Australia and Europe have shown her films.
