 Jim Libiran, Filippine/Philippines, 2007, 97', Beta SP Nel lato oscuro della Manila notturna, "tribu'' di giovani gangsters si aggirano alla ricerca di facili truffe e brividi precari. Tondo (distretto di Manila) pulsa al ritmo dell'hip hop, del freestyle gangsta rap e degli effluvi e sensazioni delle droghe, del sesso e della violenza. Noi guardiamo questo mondo crepuscolare attraverso gli occhi di Ebet, un bambino di 10 anni. Il regista ha impiegato veri membri delle bande per i ruoli principali del film. Le bande, appartenenti clan rivali, hanno collaborato insieme a questo progetto, portando un'ondata di unificazione e pace in una larga parte dei ghetti di Manila. Tribu ha partecipato a numerosi festival internazionali, tra i quali la 58/a edizione della Berlinale, ed ha vinto il premio come miglior film, migliori attori e miglior colonna sonora al Cinemalaya 2007. In the darker side of Manila-by-night, "tribes" of youthful gangsters roam the streets in search of quick fixes and precarious thrills. Tondo throbs to the beat of of hiphop and freestyle gangsta rap, and to the scents and sensations of drugs and sex and violence. We witness this crepuscular underworld through the eyes of ten-year-old Ebet. The filmmaker employed real-life gang members as lead actors in this film. These gangs were from rival clans and working together to finish this project triggered a wave of unification and peace in a large part of Tondo's ghettos. Tribu participated in several international film festivals, including the 58th Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin and won the best picture, best actor and best sound awards at Cinemalaya 2007. Jim Libiran, nato a Tondo (Manila, Filippine), è un pluripremiato scrittore, poeta, documentarista, produttore televisivo e giornalista. È stato anche un sindacalista e un organizzatore/educatore in organizzazioni di base. Ha vinto numerosi premi per le sue poesie ed i suoi saggi ed ha ricevuto menzioni per i suoi documentari. Come giornalista televisivo ha realizzato documentari e reportage sulle guerre in Iraq, sui talebani in Afghanistan, sulle ribellioni nel Mindanao, ma anche inchieste di carattere socio-culturale nelle Filippine. Tribu è il suo primo lungometraggio. Jim Libiran, a native of Tondo (Manila, Philippines), is a multi-awarded writer, poet, documentary maker, television producer and journalist. He was also a labor activist, and a grassroots organizer/educator. He has won several literary prizes for his poetry and essays, and has been cited for his television documentaries. As a broadcast journalist, he has done documentaries and reportage on the eve of the wars in Iraq; the Taliban in Afghanistan; the rebellions in Mindanao; as well as socio-cultural investigations on things uniquely Filipino.
