Watch director's interview Corpi che fanno l'amore per più di tre minuti. La donna è annoiata, stanca. Il tempo è dilatato, sospeso. Lulu fa la croupier in un casinò di Los Angeles. È bella, arrabbiata e vive sola. Nitzan, la sorella minore di Lulu, è nel pieno di una crisi psicotica. Girato in gran parte nella Città degli Angeli, Phantom Love è costruito in base al principio delle bambole russe: da ogni scena ne scaturisce un'altra. Come tutte le opere di Nina Menkes, presenta un personaggio alienato da un ambiente inospitale e ostile (qui l'ambiente famigliare), in cui la violenza esterna amplifica quella interna in un claustrofobico gioco di specchi. L'invasione dello spazio vitale che controlla minuziosamente da parte della sorella, influenza Lulu come un elettroshock, e non le resterà che iniziare a cambiare.
Bodies are shown having sex for over three minutes. The woman gets bored and weary. Time is dilated, suspended. Lulu is a female croupier in a Los Angeles casino. Living alone, she is a beautiful and angry woman. Nitzan, Lulu's younger sister, is in the middle of a nervous breakdown. Shot mainly in the City of Los Angels, Phantom Love is constructed like a set of Russian dolls, each scene giving rise to another within it. As in all of Nina Menkes' work, the film features a character alienated by an inhospitable and hostile environment, here, that of the family, where exterior violence echoes internal violence in a claustrophobic play of mirror images. When her sister invades the private space she so tightly controls, it is like electro-shock for Lulu, who has no choice but to begin to change.
Nina Menkes, figura di spicco del cinema underground americano, ha studiato cinema all'Università di Los Angeles ed è diventata una specialista in film a basso costo. Spesso lavorando in coppia con la sorella Tinka, ha creato un linguaggio cinematografico personale che le ha permesso di imporsi in un mondo quasi esclusivamente maschile. I suoi film sono stati selezionati da festival internazionali come Toronto, Rotterdam, Sundance e dal Museum of Modern Art di New York. Nel 2007 la Viennale le ha reso omaggio con una retrospettiva.
Nina Menkes, a leading figure in the American underground cinema, studied film at UCLA and became adept at low-budget filmmaking. Often working with Tinka, her sister, she has invented a cinematic language of her own to convey her point of view in an almost exclusively male milieu. Her films have shown in international film festivals including Toronto, Rotterdam, Sundance, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2007 Nina Menkes was honored with a retrospective program of her films, at the Viennale Film Festival.
