«Che peccato ho commesso per essere nata donna?» si chiede Lakshmi a voce alta. Una ragazza di 21 anni, donna delle pulizie a Mumbai, che lavora dieci ore al giorno, sette giorni la settimana. Trai suoi datori di lavoro c'è Nishtha Jain, che inizia a fare un documentario che esplora la loro relazione. Nishtha riprende Lakshmi a casa sua e a lavoro nelle case altrui. Man mano che la regista si inoltra più in profondità nella vita di Lakshmi, è portata a mettere in questione molte delle cose che dava per scontate. Durante un anno e mezzo di drammatici cambiamenti, la costruzione stessa del documentario influenza gli eventi e la relazione tra le due donne.


«What sin did I commit to be born a woman?» Lakshmi wonders aloud. A 21-year-old housemaid in Mumbai, she works ten hours a day, seven days a week. One of her employers is Nishtha Jain, who begins to make a documentary that explores their relationship. Nishtha films Lakshmi at home, and at work in various houses. As the filmmaker is drawn deeper into Lakshmi's life, she is forced to question many of the things she takes for granted. During a year and a half of dramatic changes, the process of filming has its own impact on unfolding events and on the relationship between the two women.



Nishtha Jain, studi post laurea al Jamia Mass Communication Research Centre di Nuova Delhi, comincia la sua carriera come redattrice e corrispondente per programmi video di attualità. Fin dal 1998 ha realizzato documentari, sia di produzione indipendente che per la televisione. I suoi ultimi lavori includono City of Photos (2005) e Call It Slut (2006), 6 Yards to democracy (2006).


Nishtha Jain, a post-graduate from the Jamia Mass Communication Research Centre, New Delhi, began her career as an editor and correspondent for video newsmagazines. Since 1998 she has been making independent documentaries as well as TV docu-series. Her recent films include City of Photos (2005), Call It Slut (2006) and 6 Yards to democracy (2006).
