As usual, Tekfestival dedicates this section to screen the best and most recent documentaries and Italian and international social cinema productions. 23 films will testify not only the politics of the 5th edition of Tekfestival, but also the trends and the themes which called the attention of the directors and the audience in the last two years.
This edition propose like Special Events SIR! NO SIR! of
David Zeiger, YOUNG REBELS of Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE of Mohammad Bakri and PORCA MISERIA of Armando Ceste.
It is particularly interesting and stimulating to learn how many men and women authors have been investigating the effects of the spread of new consumptions and cultural behaviours on countries such as Serbia, Iran, Mongolia. From Chicken Elections through De(s)sert to Nose Iranian Style, we will experience a succession of scenes, sometimes hilarious, that tell of the use and misuse of plastic surgery, of mobile phones and electrical appliances.
Also this year we will face the problem of the war in Iraq, though we wished there was no need anymore, with the pluri-awarded Bagdad Rap and with the issue of media use in times of a “culture clash”. Last year we analysed how the media are used by Western governments as a mean of propaganda; this year we will look at the other side, and with Media Jihad we will see how the Islamic Jihad could do this just the same. During this first visual path, This is Camp X Ray presents to the audience of the Festival ,and not only to them, Guantanamo, a true paradigmatic example of redefinition of rights.
With Calle Miguel Claro 1359 we will go to South America and in particularly to Chile, where after the coup d’état on September 11th, 1973 the Italian embassy was crowded with asylum seekers.
The director of The Weather Underground, Sam Green will come back to the Festival with his Lot 63, Grave C, a delicate reconstruction of one of the stories that shocked United States at the end of the Fabulous Sixties.
We decided also to begin the screenings of this section with a tribute to Antonello Branca, a rigorous documentary filmmaker who died a few years ago. By paying our tribute to him, we will pay a tribute to a way of making documentaries which is first of all a close investigation free from all flatteries.
